Who Will Be There When Crisis Strikes?

Who Will Be There When Crisis Strikes?

Lashara, one of our dedicated Community Health Workers (CHWs), received a referral about a mother and her 25-year-old son who had been walking for three months from Myrtle Beach, experiencing homelessness.

While passing through Franklin County, tragedy struck—the son was hit by a vehicle and killed.

Alone, grieving, and without support, the mother had nowhere to turn. But Lashara was there.

She quickly coordinated with local churches and community members to cover the cost of the son’s funeral. Flora Funeral Home partnered with her to accept donations, ensuring any remaining funds would go directly to the mother.

Through her journey, the mother had befriended a pastor in a nearby town—her son’s last wish was to live there. Thanks to Lashara’s support, the pastor officiated the funeral and offered the mother a place to live, fulfilling her son’s final hope.

Before she left town, Lashara offered to help her enroll in Medicaid and SNAP benefits to ensure she had ongoing support. Though the mother declined, saying she would handle it later, her immediate needs were met because a CHW was there to help.

But What Happens When CHWs Are No Longer There?

Federal grants are the backbone of many nonprofit programs. Last year, United Way of Virginia’s Blue Ridge (UWVBR) raised $5.95 million to serve our community—$4.2 million (70%) of which came from grants.

Due to recent federal grant cuts, our Community Health Worker (CHW) initiative is at risk—especially in Franklin County. While we have made immediate adjustments to sustain the program, this is only a short-term fix. If we do not secure new funding by June 30, these services will be lost.

Without CHWs, many in Franklin County will lose access to healthcare, essential services, and trusted guidance.

Without CHWs, who will be there when the next crisis hits?

This program must continue—but we can’t do it without you.

🚨 Who will help people access emergency support in their darkest moments?
🚨 Who will connect them to housing, food, and financial assistance?
🚨 Who will ensure that no one is left to struggle alone?

🌟 We have until June 30 to bridge this funding gap. Donate today to ensure ensure that our neighbors continue to have access to the care and support they need, when they need it most.
