Meet Joe: A Story of Support, Resilience, and Community Impact

Joe’s journey exemplifies the power of partnership in creating lasting change. Referred to Bradley Free Clinic’s Community Health Worker (CHW) by the Dorcas House, Joe sought support in finding meaningful employment as a re-entering citizen. Thanks to the clinic’s dedicated CHW and a strong network of community organizations, Joe was quickly connected with VA Cares, an organization focused on empowering individuals transitioning back into the workforce.

Through this collaboration, Joe was introduced to a local employer, with his CHW offering guidance and encouragement throughout the application process. Once he secured a job, Bradley Free Clinic leveraged its community resources, including an Uber Health partnership, to ensure Joe had reliable transportation—eliminating a key barrier to his success. With this critical support, Joe built stability and, in time, saved enough to purchase his own vehicle.

Today, Joe continues to thrive. He is gainfully employed and actively pursuing personal growth through counseling services at Bradley Free Clinic. His story also highlights the growing impact of Community Health Workers in the Blue Ridge region.

At United Way of Virginia’s Blue Ridge, we recognize the essential role CHWs play in bridging gaps in care and support. Through our CHW Hub, we help coordinate training opportunities by connecting CHWs with state-certified training sites, assist them with state certification and recertification applications, and provide funding for core competency training when their employers are unable to cover the cost. Our Hub also helps sustain this critical work by supporting part of a CHW’s salary at Bradley Free Clinic.

By strengthening the CHW workforce, we’re ensuring that more individuals like Joe receive the support they need to build stability and transform their lives.
