Driving Opportunity: How United Way’s Support of OnRamp Helped Michael Secure His Future

A determined job seeker in the community faced a major setback on his path to financial stability. His vehicle, essential for transportation, was unsafe and unable to pass inspection due to severely worn tires. The timing of this issue could not have been worse—he had an upcoming job interview for a position that could provide the stability and opportunity he had been working toward. Without a reliable way to get there, his chances of securing the job were in jeopardy.

Through the support of United Way of Virginia’s Blue Ridge, community partner TAP’s OnRamp program was able to step in and provide critical assistance. OnRamp is a workforce development program that connects individuals with career opportunities by providing personal navigators who:

  • Guide clients through the job-training process
  • Connect them with supportive services
  • Help remove barriers to employment, such as transportation challenges

As part of the System Innovation Framework developed by UWVBR during the 2018 strategic planning process OnRampUnited Way of Virginia’s Blue Ridge (UWVBR) provides the financial foundation and additional supports that allows TAP and the Greater Workforce Development Board to effectively implement the program. UWVBR’s investment ensures:

  • Sustained Program Operations: Funding covers staffing, training, and administrative costs necessary for program delivery.
  • Access to Critical Support Services: UWVBR resources enable OnRamp to assist participants with immediate needs, such as transportation assistance, work attire, and other essential job-related expenses.
  • Capacity Building for Partners: UWVBR strengthens TAP and the Greater Workforce Development Board by providing funding, strategic guidance, and coordination to enhance service delivery and maximize community impact.
  • Outcome Measurement & Reporting: UWVBR collaborates with program partners to track key success metrics, ensuring accountability and continuous program improvement.

How did OnRamp provide assistance to Michael? It replaced his vehicle’s tires, ensuring it was safe and roadworthy. This immediate intervention removed a significant barrier, allowing him to attend the interview with confidence. He was hired on the spot and has remained employed in this position for nearly three months, steadily building a stronger foundation for his future.

His success highlights the power of partnerships in creating lasting change. Michael’s story demonstrates the tangible difference that UWVBR’s funding and the collaborative efforts of TAP and the Greater Workforce Development Board make in the lives of individuals striving for financial stability. By funding OnRamp, United Way of Virginia’s Blue Ridge is not only investing in workforce development but also empowering individuals, strengthening families, and creating a more resilient local economy.
