At United Way of Virginia’s Blue Ridge, community impact is about more than programs or metrics — it’s about people, partnerships, and building systems that help families thrive over the long term. That work is guided by leadership rooted in both strategy and lived experience.
We’re excited to introduce Tamika White, our new Vice President of Community Impact, and to share a bit more about who she is, what drives her, and how her journey has shaped her approach to strengthening communities.
A Career Rooted in Equity, Opportunity, and Systems Change
With more than 25 years of experience across education, workforce development, marketing, and organizational leadership, Tamika brings a deep understanding of how systems intersect — and how they can be redesigned to expand opportunity.
Her career began in education, where she taught middle school math and science in Fairfax and Roanoke, mentoring students and helping close achievement gaps through student-centered instruction. That early work instilled a lifelong commitment to equity, belonging, and empowerment through access to knowledge and opportunity.
From there, Tamika transitioned into marketing and events, spending nearly a decade leading large-scale community engagement initiatives that connected diverse stakeholders around shared goals. Over the past twelve years, she has worked at the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority, most recently serving as Deputy Director of Talent Management, where her focus centered on workforce strategy, community impact, and organizational transformation.
Across these roles, Tamika has:
- Advanced more than 100 employees into leadership roles
- Built strategic partnerships with nonprofits, colleges, and workforce boards
- Led equity-centered engagement strategies that improved retention and satisfaction
- Mobilized large-scale community initiatives connecting residents to jobs, training, and resources
Her work consistently bridges people, systems, and outcomes — a perspective that aligns closely with United Way’s approach to community impact.
What Drew Her to United Way of Virginia’s Blue Ridge
“I was drawn to UWVBR because of its bold vision for long-term community change,” Tamika shared. “This organization is focused not just on helping in the moment, but on building systems that create real opportunity and lasting impact.”
What excites her most is the opportunity to work alongside community partners and residents to help create pathways for families to thrive — ensuring that solutions are informed by both data and community voice.
Tamika’s leadership philosophy centers on collaboration and shared ownership, ensuring community members are not only at the center of programs, but empowered as long-term partners in change.
What Community Impact Means to Her
For Tamika, community impact goes beyond professional responsibility.
“To me, community impact means helping create spaces where people feel supported, valued, and empowered,” she said. “It’s about making sure families have access to opportunity, stability, and hope — and that our communities grow stronger because we’re working together.”
Her experiences across education, workforce development, and organizational leadership have reinforced a core belief: meaningful impact happens when people, resources, and systems are intentionally connected. Early support, clear pathways, and strong partnerships can change lives — and create sustainable outcomes that last across generations.
Looking Ahead: Listening, Learning, and Building Together
As Tamika begins her work across the Virginia’s Blue Ridge region, she’s most looking forward to listening, learning, and collaborating.
“This region is full of heart, talent, and innovation,” she shared. “I can’t wait to build strong relationships and work together toward lasting change.”
Returning to Roanoke — her hometown — makes this role especially meaningful. Being close to the people and places that shaped her keeps her grounded and energized, and reinforces her commitment to strengthening the community she calls home.
More Than a Fundraiser — A Force for Possibility
Tamika believes deeply in United Way’s role as a convener and catalyst.
“United Way is more than a fundraiser,” she said. “I view the organization as a force for hope and possibility. By bringing people together around shared goals, United Way helps create pathways where families can thrive, communities can grow stronger, and everyone has a chance to succeed.”
We’re proud to welcome Tamika White to United Way of Virginia’s Blue Ridge and look forward to the leadership, insight, and heart she brings to our Community Impact work.
